[WWII AU] you and your baby went to town

Waiting for Bucky's day off has been as difficult as waiting for Christmas used to be when she was a kid. And it doesn't help that they just don't seem to be able to manage time alone together after the mission – not enough of it, anyway. A few stolen kisses here and there are all she gets, even as she feels like she's burning up from pure want.

When he finally tells her, grinning, that he's gotten another R&R day, she spends the next few days in a haze of relieved anticipation. Not just at the thought of finally being able to touch him, but just because she loves spending the time with him. She knows it's a bad idea, knows it's only going to hurt so much worse down the line, but she can't stop herself, and she doesn't want to.

She doesn't ride with him into town this time. Instead, he'd told her to meet him at the little chapel he'd shown her earlier. Wilkins is happy to give her a lift, after she spends extra time and care on her hair and makeup and clothes – the civilian outfit he likes so much and which Lorraine had tried to ruin. 

She's right on time as she walks into the little chapel and looks around for him. "Bucky?"

"Okay." He keeps petting her back, slow and steady.

"Do you have any questions for me? Anything you want me to tell you about?"

"Well, it's funny." She shifts to pillow her head on his shoulder, nudging her face into the crook of his neck. "Because I actually do know about you already, a little. Just like I know about the other Howling Commandos."

Sharon presses a kiss to his throat, then moves back to look into his face. "But there's so many details I don't know. What were you like as a kid? What makes you really mad? What was the most ridiculous thing you've ever done to impress a girl? I want to know it all."

"You might do better to ask Steve that last one," he laughs. "I'm sure he'd have an opinion or two about it."

"Let's see, what was I like as a kid? Probably like most kids, I guess. Older brother, that you know. Loved baseball and running and all - still do." An idea strikes him, and he grins down at her.

"I thought for a while I'd try to go pro, with baseball or boxing. But I wasn't that good at baseball, and boxing didn't seem like it'd be a good long-term career."

"Wouldn't want to mess up that pretty face," she teases, and runs her fingers through his hair from forehead to crown, leaving waves in her wake.

"Baseball, huh? What position did you play?"

He makes a face at her, at that, then focuses on her question as he tips his head into her touch.

"Pitcher, a lot of the time," he tells her. "I have pretty decent hand-eye coordination, turns out. The rest of the time I usually played shortstop."

"First base, for me," she tells him, laughing at the face he'd made. "Sometimes left field."

His face lights up. "Oh, really?"

[from_the_outside]

"Mm-hm. But softball, more than baseball," she tells him. "I haven't played baseball since I was a little kid."

[nerves_of_ice]

"Still." He sounds as delighted as he looks.

[from_the_outside]

"Still," she agrees, amused. "And I definitely love going to games."

[nerves_of_ice]

"Hey, wait, in your time are the Dodgers - no, you probably can't tell me that." Bucky cuts himself off and laughs. "Never mind. Oh, man, I'd love to take you to a game, if I could."

It's an impossibility for so many reasons, he knows, but just for a moment he lets himself entertain the idea.

She grins, bright and delighted, at the mental image. "I'd love that," she agrees. "Cold beers, hot dogs, and baseball? Do dates get better than that?"

He laughs again and kisses her hair. "You'll have to tell me. Give me a hint," he teases. "What's your dream date?"

[from_the_outside]

"This one's right up there," she teases back, before thinking about the question as she idly traces patterns on his skin.

"Toss-up," she says, finally. "Between a fancy night out, all dressed up to go dancing and have a nice dinner, but maybe getting late night pizza instead, or something really simple like going to a beach, strolling along a boardwalk, playing games and acting like kids."

"Coney Island," he says, firmly. "You'd love it."

[from_the_outside]

"Yeah?"

She grins at him and rests her hand over his chest. "So what's your dream date?"

[nerves_of_ice]

"Aside from this?" he teases. "Well, I'm pretty fond of dancing."

[from_the_outside]

"I noticed," she teases. "You're pretty good at it, too."

[nerves_of_ice]

"So are you," he points out. "Makes us a good team."

[from_the_outside]

"We're pretty well-matched," she agrees, and smiles at him.

"So does this mean you get all my dances from now on?"

[nerves_of_ice]

He smiles back, and runs his fingers through her hair. "I'll take as many dances as you'll give me," he says, softly. "But I'm not a jealous kind of guy. I'm not going to get all fussed if you dance with friends, too."

[from_the_outside]

"Okay," she murmurs, and tips her head into his touch.

"Besides, you're the one I want walking me home at the end of the night."

He smiles, slow and sweet, and leans in to kiss her.

[from_the_outside]

She kisses him back, soft and lingering, then once more before she settles back against his shoulder. "So, dancing," she notes. "I think we can manage to make that happen. Anything else you like to do on a date?"

[nerves_of_ice]

"For me, it's more about finding something that we both think could be fun, than about doing something in particular," he tells her. "I like all kinds of things."

His quick grin flashes. "You might have noticed I can be a little outgoing."
