[WWII AU] you and your baby went to town

Waiting for Bucky's day off has been as difficult as waiting for Christmas used to be when she was a kid. And it doesn't help that they just don't seem to be able to manage time alone together after the mission – not enough of it, anyway. A few stolen kisses here and there are all she gets, even as she feels like she's burning up from pure want.

When he finally tells her, grinning, that he's gotten another R&R day, she spends the next few days in a haze of relieved anticipation. Not just at the thought of finally being able to touch him, but just because she loves spending the time with him. She knows it's a bad idea, knows it's only going to hurt so much worse down the line, but she can't stop herself, and she doesn't want to.

She doesn't ride with him into town this time. Instead, he'd told her to meet him at the little chapel he'd shown her earlier. Wilkins is happy to give her a lift, after she spends extra time and care on her hair and makeup and clothes – the civilian outfit he likes so much and which Lorraine had tried to ruin. 

She's right on time as she walks into the little chapel and looks around for him. "Bucky?"

"I'm not worried." Maybe he should be, but he'd meant what he'd told Sharon's aunt before, and he'll stand by it and stand up to her if it's necessary.

Once she's finished her water, he tries to coax her to lie back on the bed with a sweet smile. "Come curl up with me, baby?"

That smile of his is irresistible. She sets her cup aside and shifts next to him, curling against his side as he lies down and settling her head back on his shoulder, her fingers spread lightly over the flat, soft plane of his stomach.

"Comfortable?" he murmurs, his arms around her and one hand idly running up and down her arm.

She makes a soft, affirmative sound and mouths a kiss over his shoulder. "Are you?"

"Very much." He lowers his face to her hair and just breathes in her scent for a moment.

"Will it hurt to talk about your home? I don't want to ask, if it is."

Sharon smiles at that and shakes her head, her hair brushing over his shoulder as she does. "No," she murmurs. "It's funny, but I'm so used to being low contact that this almost feels like another mission to me."

She shifts to her stomach, resting her forearm on his chest so she can lean her chin on it and look up at him. "What do you want to know?"

"Lots," he says, cheerfully, and gives her as charming a smile as he can. "Whatever you can or want to tell me, that is."

He considers for a second, then asks, "What are your parents like?"

"They're nice," she tells him. It's impossible not to smile back, so she does. "My dad works a lot, but he always makes time for us. He loves golfing with his buddies."

She runs her thumb absently back and forth over his skin. "My mom's on about a million boards and associations and committees. She does a lot of fundraising for various causes. They both like to host dinner parties and go to the club and attend things like gallery openings and black-tie charity events."

He lets out a low whistle. "Impressive." And about a million miles away from where and how he and Steve'd grown up.

She makes a face at the surprised expression on his.

"Sorry," she murmurs. "I know it's a lot. I was very privileged, growing up."

"Hey," he reassures her, cuddling her closer. "Hey, no. Don't think that. You've got nothing to apologize for, angel. Nothing at all."

"Still." She lets him tuck her close and comfortable against him, without resistance. "It's got to sound like a whole other world, even without the time travel stuff. The truth is I grew up as an only child in a wealthy family, and I never had to struggle for anything material."

Her smile is a little wry, but fond. "And my parents are both great, but they never really understood me. I was pretty far from the daughter they thought they'd have."

"Skinned knees and climbing trees," he recalls, and runs his hand up her arm to thread his fingers through her hair.

"And sure, it's different from how I grew up, but it's neat to hear about. I'm glad you guys were comfortable."

She smiles and tilts her head into his touch. "How about you?" she asks.

"I know you've told me a little about your sisters already. Do you still live with both your parents?"

He shakes his head, absently drawing his fingers through her hair.

"No. Dad died years ago," he tells her. "Training accident at Lehigh. I moved out as soon as I was old enough and got a place with Steve so the girls could have more room." His smile's fond and rueful. "From what Becky says they have lots more room in Indiana, though. Sounds like they're happy there. Mom's doing better, too, I hear."

Some of this she knew already, but it's different, hearing it from him.

"Do you think any of them will ever go back to Brooklyn?"

"You know, I'm not sure." He twines a lock of her hair around his index finger, then lets it fall into a curl and reaches for another.

"They seem pretty happy out there. I mean, they'll always have a place if they want it, you know? I guess we'll see how things go."

She makes a soft sound of affirmation, feeling the familiar pang of sorrow at the thought of his family, and how none of them will ever see him again.

Maybe some of his younger sisters are still alive. When she gets back, maybe she could look them up, and... tell them about her time travel?

Impossible. She hides her rueful expression by ducking her head to kiss his chest, and smiles when she looks back up. "Must be a big change from the city."

He grins at that. "Sure sounds like it. Shelbyville, Indiana's a quiet kind of place. A lot of farmland, not so much in the way of cars or noise or city lights."

She smiles back at him. "It sounds nice."

Quiet and open and green. "I grew up in Richmond, but I told you about the mountain house. I always liked being there more."

"I guess so - I've never been," he admits. "Not yet, anyway. But the girls seem to like it, so that's worth a lot."

He tugs gently at a lock of her hair. "So you did. Not much of a city girl, huh?"

She shrugs, a little. "I like cities," she points out. "But there haven't been any I've loved. Not like you and Steve love Brooklyn."

Bucky's grin is immediate and as bright as the sunlight outside. "Then you're gonna have to visit Brooklyn, aren't you?"

It's all she can do to keep her smile from turning sad or shaded. "First thing when I get home," she promises.

Bucky leans down and kisses her, sweetly and lingering. "I hope you don't mind that I'm hoping you can stay around for a little while longer," he murmurs. "Until we have to go back to the SSR's home base, maybe."
