[WWII AU] you and your baby went to town

Waiting for Bucky's day off has been as difficult as waiting for Christmas used to be when she was a kid. And it doesn't help that they just don't seem to be able to manage time alone together after the mission – not enough of it, anyway. A few stolen kisses here and there are all she gets, even as she feels like she's burning up from pure want.

When he finally tells her, grinning, that he's gotten another R&R day, she spends the next few days in a haze of relieved anticipation. Not just at the thought of finally being able to touch him, but just because she loves spending the time with him. She knows it's a bad idea, knows it's only going to hurt so much worse down the line, but she can't stop herself, and she doesn't want to.

She doesn't ride with him into town this time. Instead, he'd told her to meet him at the little chapel he'd shown her earlier. Wilkins is happy to give her a lift, after she spends extra time and care on her hair and makeup and clothes – the civilian outfit he likes so much and which Lorraine had tried to ruin. 

She's right on time as she walks into the little chapel and looks around for him. "Bucky?"

She makes a soft, contented sound and closes her eyes, breathing in his warm scent, trying to memorize the way his body feels against hers. In this moment, she can't even wish she were with him in the future, because being here in this little cottage strewn with wildflowers is so perfect she couldn't imagine being anywhere better.

"So," she murmurs, her voice lazy and teasing. "Does this mean we're going steady?"

"If you want it to," Bucky tells her. He keeps combing his fingers through her hair and stroking down her back. "I'd like that, just so you know."

She smiles at that and shifts under his touch, like a cat being petted. "So would I."

Bucky smiles back at her. "Then it's settled."

He kisses her hair again. "Are you warm enough, angel?"

"Okay," she murmurs, her smile tugging, unruly, at her mouth.

Sharon Carter doesn't get giddy over boys. And yet here she is, with this feeling like champagne is bubbling over in her chest. "Mm-hm," she promises, curling close to him. "I'm fine."

She lifts her head to kiss him, gently. "How about that water? Would you mind, baby?"

"Wait here," he assures her, and kisses her back before he settles her into the hay once more. "I'll be right back."

Bucky rolls to his feet and goes to the door. He opens it a crack and looks around, just to check that they're still alone, then goes out to retrieve the picnic basket and bring it back. He locks the door again, then pours her a glass of water from a canteen he has stashed in the basket and brings it over to her.

"Here you go, baby."

"Thank you, sweetheart."

She sits up and accepts the cup, apparently uncaring that she's still bare as a newborn. So is he, and she gives him an appreciative look now that he's up and she can get a good view. "Gosh, you're pretty."

"So are you." He pours a glass for himself and sets the basket to the side, then sits down beside her.

"You make me weak in the knees with how gorgeous you are."

"You've kept yourself impressively upright until now," she teases, before she sips at her water.

"Dancing and all."

[nerves_of_ice]

"I'm pretty tough," he teases back. "Weak knees and all."

[from_the_outside]

"You sure are."

She leans over to kiss his cheek, utterly enchanted and simply giving herself up to it. What else can she do?

He smiles at that, brushes her hair back, and presses a kiss to her shoulder.

She rests her cheek lightly against his hair until he lifts his head away. "This has all been so crazy," she murmurs.

"Ever since I fell through that portal. But having you and Aunt Peggy and getting to work with the team... I can't regret any of it."

Sharon smiles over at him, warmly content. "You make me really happy. I just want you to know that."

"I'm so glad," he murmurs. "You deserve all kinds of happiness. And we all love having you here, baby, you know that, right?"

"I know," she assures him. "Everyone's been incredible. And welcoming. Especially you."

She nudges her shoulder against his, teasing. "I couldn't ask for anything more."

"If you come up with anything to ask for, don't hesitate," he laughs, and puts his arm around her to pull her close.

Her grin flashes like sunlight on water and she leans into him without hesitation. "I can probably come up with a few things," she murmurs, and tilts her head back so she can kiss his neck.

"And the good news is, we don't have to leave this spot for any of them."

"I like the sound of that," Bucky tells her, as a small shiver runs through him at the touch of her lips.

"I thought you might."

She kisses him again, sweet and lingering, feeling his pulse thrumming against her lips. "You realize it's going to be even harder trying to keep my hands off you now, don't you?"

"We'll just have to figure something out," he murmurs, curling his hand over her hip and pressing a kiss to her hair.

"I believe in our ingenuity," she teases, and leans comfortably against him, slipping her free arm around the small of his back and spreading her fingers over his ribs, marveling at the fact that she's allowed to touch him this way.

"We're pretty clever," he agrees, trying for solemn and failing due to the laughter in his eyes.

"Mm-hm."

She kisses his shoulder and looks up at him, savoring the way his eyes sparkle and dance. He looks so happy. Somehow, she's part of that. It's unbelievable. "Don't worry," she promises, stifling her laugh. "I'll protect you from Aunt Peggy."

"I'm not worried." Maybe he should be, but he'd meant what he'd told Sharon's aunt before, and he'll stand by it and stand up to her if it's necessary.

Once she's finished her water, he tries to coax her to lie back on the bed with a sweet smile. "Come curl up with me, baby?"

That smile of his is irresistible. She sets her cup aside and shifts next to him, curling against his side as he lies down and settling her head back on his shoulder, her fingers spread lightly over the flat, soft plane of his stomach.
