[WWII AU] you and your baby went to town

Waiting for Bucky's day off has been as difficult as waiting for Christmas used to be when she was a kid. And it doesn't help that they just don't seem to be able to manage time alone together after the mission – not enough of it, anyway. A few stolen kisses here and there are all she gets, even as she feels like she's burning up from pure want.

When he finally tells her, grinning, that he's gotten another R&R day, she spends the next few days in a haze of relieved anticipation. Not just at the thought of finally being able to touch him, but just because she loves spending the time with him. She knows it's a bad idea, knows it's only going to hurt so much worse down the line, but she can't stop herself, and she doesn't want to.

She doesn't ride with him into town this time. Instead, he'd told her to meet him at the little chapel he'd shown her earlier. Wilkins is happy to give her a lift, after she spends extra time and care on her hair and makeup and clothes – the civilian outfit he likes so much and which Lorraine had tried to ruin. 

She's right on time as she walks into the little chapel and looks around for him. "Bucky?"

“I should have caught you,” he tells her, tipping his head into her touch.

“Although I have to admit wasn’t expecting an angel to fall out of the sky.”

"I'm just glad you didn't shoot me. That would have been awkward."

She strokes her fingers through his soft hair and leans down to kiss him, gentle. "Maybe you didn't catch me then, but you still make me feel like I'm flying."

Bucky wraps his arms around her and holds her close to him as he kisses her back.

“You say the sweetest things.”

"Mm." She hums against his lips, content. "You are the only person in the world who'd say that."

She's not sweet. She's never sweet. But he is, and she finds she wants to treat him gently, even as she loves teasing him.

“Well, it’s true.” He slides one hand up into her hair, curving his fingers over the nape of her neck, and kisses her again.

She shifts over him as he kisses her, and when it breaks she tips her head to the side to kiss his jaw, the side of his throat. "Careful," she murmurs, a laugh in her voice. "You're going to make me forget all about the wine."

He laughs openly at that, a little breathless from the touch of her lips.

“Do you want me to remind you?”

"No."

She lifts her head to look down at him, her eyes warm. "I get drunk enough just on you."

“I feel the same.” He shifts under her, leaning up to kiss her again.

She laughs and leans down to kiss him again, trailing her fingers from his hair down along the side of his neck, feeling his pulse beating steadily against her palm.

He shivers again at her touch and tangles his fingers in her hair, tilting her head back so he can press kisses along the side of her throat, tracing the line of her pulse with his lips.

Her breath catches at the feel of his mouth against her skin, and she shivers in the arm he still has around her.

"Baby," she murmurs. "We barely had any alone time lately. You're going to drive me crazy."

“I hope so,” he murmurs, his breath warm against her skin. “I really hope so.”

He nips lightly at where her neck meets her shoulder, then soothes the spot with his tongue.

She shakes in his arms and slides her fingers up into his hair as her eyes fall half-lidded.

"Bucky," she murmurs, flattening her other hand against his ribs. "No one's going to come back here, will they?"

“Not likely, but—“

He raises his head from kissing her shoulder and gives her a sweet smile.

“Come inside with me?”

She smiles back at him, feeling her heart flip in her chest, and leans to give him a gentle kiss. "Okay," she murmurs. "Let's go inside."

He shifts to the side, setting her gently back on the blanket, then rolls to his feet and leans down to help her up.

Bucky kisses her again, then twines his fingers with hers and leads her to the door of the cottage, then pushes it open.

Wildflowers dot the space inside, scattered here and there in miniature bunches tied with string and hung from anything he was able to hang them from. On the far side of the room, Bucky’s made a bed with many thick layers of hay covered by a clean sheet over another makeshift burlap blanket.

She can't help the look of surprise or the way her breath catches as she moves slowly through the door, her gaze tracking over the hanging flowers and the neat bed in the corner. "I can't believe you went to all this trouble," she says, looking up and around. She has no idea if the daisy in her hair survived his fingers being in it, too, but she could pick another dozen in here, easily.

Sharon turns to him, her fingers tightening in his, and smiles. "It turns out you're a romantic, Sergeant Barnes."

He closes the door and locks it behind them so there’s no chance of them being disturbed even if someone wandered by, then turns back and smiles down at her. The light from the vine-covered windows is soft against the gold of her hair.

“I told you,” he murmurs. “I wanted to give you more.”

"You have," she promises. And, truth be told, she'd rather be in this little cottage with him, somewhere in France, on a bed of clean hay surrounded by wildflowers than in the ritziest hotel room in the world with anyone else. With him, that homemade wine tastes like the finest champagne.

She smiles and lifts their linked hands to press a kiss to his fingers. "Kiss me, sweetheart," she murmurs, and lets go of his hands to put her arms around his neck.

He puts his arms around her and pulls her flush against him as he dips his head and takes her mouth as she’s asked, once and then again, and again. These kisses are still sweet and lingering, but deeper than before, more wanting.

He could kiss her while the sky turned around them, day falling to night, and never stopping.

He kisses her until she's trembling in his arms, her own secure around his neck, each deep, sweet kiss stealing her breath away.

They aren't under the stars, but she feels like the world is wheeling beneath them, anyway. "Bucky," she murmurs, and kisses him again. "Just so you know, I haven't changed my mind."

“If you do,” he promises, “at any time, you only have to say.”

He kisses her again, then pulls back so that he can trail his fingers along her throat, slowly, deliberately, bringing them to rest at the side of her neck, his thumb making small circles over her collarbone as he watches her.

“May I?” he murmurs, with a tug at her shirt collar.

"I know."

She's relaxed in his arms, aside from thrumming with desire, and her eyes are dark and trusting. Trust isn't something she finds often, in her line of work, but she doesn't even question giving it to him. She really could stop him with a word, if she wanted to.

She doesn't want to, so she nods, watching him back as he watches her. "Yes."

His smile is sweet as he leans in to kiss her again, his fingers working at the buttons of her shirt, one after the other.

Slowly, deliberately, he drops kisses along her jaw, then her throat, then traces the rise of her collarbone with his mouth as he unfastens her shirt and eases it from her shoulders.
