[WWII AU] you and your baby went to town

Waiting for Bucky's day off has been as difficult as waiting for Christmas used to be when she was a kid. And it doesn't help that they just don't seem to be able to manage time alone together after the mission – not enough of it, anyway. A few stolen kisses here and there are all she gets, even as she feels like she's burning up from pure want.

When he finally tells her, grinning, that he's gotten another R&R day, she spends the next few days in a haze of relieved anticipation. Not just at the thought of finally being able to touch him, but just because she loves spending the time with him. She knows it's a bad idea, knows it's only going to hurt so much worse down the line, but she can't stop herself, and she doesn't want to.

She doesn't ride with him into town this time. Instead, he'd told her to meet him at the little chapel he'd shown her earlier. Wilkins is happy to give her a lift, after she spends extra time and care on her hair and makeup and clothes – the civilian outfit he likes so much and which Lorraine had tried to ruin. 

She's right on time as she walks into the little chapel and looks around for him. "Bucky?"

"Definitely not," she laughs. "It's very effective."

"Good," he murmurs, and kisses her cheek again, then leans his head against hers.

She smiles as his head nudges against hers. "Good thing I didn't want to go anywhere else, anyway."

[nerves_of_ice]

He chuckles at that, soft and low, then shifts a little to the side so that he's not weighing her down into the hay below. He keeps his arm around her, though, the long line of his body pressed to hers.

"Where would you go, if you could? While you're here, I mean."

"Hmm."

She rolls back against him, tucked against his chest and the curve of his body, and layers her forearm over his, her fingers tracing lightly over his hand. "It'd be nice to be able to stay long enough to see London."

She smiles, slight. "I wish I could bring you to Virginia. I wonder if the house has been built yet."

[nerves_of_ice]

His arm tightens around her, just the slightest bit. "You might," he points out. "We'll likely be heading back soon. Although Howard's making noises about trying to trigger some kind of reaction."

[from_the_outside]

"He is?"

Her fingers curl around his, then thread through so she can hold onto his hand, determined not to be pulled away in this moment. "Any idea how?"

[nerves_of_ice]

"Not yet." He squeezes her hand as she laces their fingers together. "I overheard my team talking about it while they were adjusting the instrument harness. They're not always good at realizing I'm listening, rather than just another piece of equipment they're working on."

He sounds matter-of-fact about it.

"They get pretty caught in their own world," she murmurs.

She imagines Howard flipping a switch and feeling that same pull as before, and her arm tightens around his. "I want to get home," she says, finally, soft in the quiet cottage. "But I don't want to leave you."

"I think it's a scientist thing," he says, dry as dust, then presses a kiss to her hair.

"I want you to be able to go home," he agrees. "But I'll never be happy about losing you."

"I don't want to lose you, either."

It's impossible to have both, though. She still has a future to get back to, and his is already written. She turns in his arms, rolling over to face him, and brushes her hand over his hair with a small, rueful smile. "But until then, I'm going to savor every second I get with you."

[nerves_of_ice]

He leans into her touch, his gaze steady on hers, as an answering smile curves his lips - faint but real, and almost impossibly sweet.

"We have here," he agrees, softly. "We have now. We have each other. We'll make the most of it."

[from_the_outside]

"Yes, we will."

Her fingers leave soft furrows in his hair before she smooths them back out, petting him gently. "And I'm so, so happy to have time with you, Bucky."

[nerves_of_ice]

"I am, too, to have time with you." He holds still as she pets him, savoring the soft thrill of sensation.

[from_the_outside]

"Good."

She leans up to kiss him, gentle and sweet. "Because you've knocked me off my feet, soldier boy."

[nerves_of_ice]

He kisses her back, then flashes a quick, bright smile at her.

"Then I'll catch you when you fall."

[from_the_outside]

"Better get ready, then," she teases. "Because I'm falling hard."

[nerves_of_ice]

The widening of his smile is the only warning she has before he rolls onto his back, bringing her with him, and wraps his arms around her to hold her close.

She laughs and relaxes, blanketing him with her body.

"You're not going anywhere, either," she teases.

[nerves_of_ice]

"Looks that way," he drawls, amused.

She smiles, triumphant, and leans to kiss his neck, slow and sweet.

He shivers at the feel of her lips against his skin and tips his head back slightly to give her full access to do whatever she wants.

"Feels nice," he murmurs.

[from_the_outside]

She smiles against his skin and kisses him again, drawing lightly up against his pulse point. "Good," she murmurs. "That's the point."

[nerves_of_ice]

Bucky laughs, deep and full. "Is it? Good to know."

[from_the_outside]

"I'm not into the really rough stuff," she laughs, before setting the edge of her teeth, light as a breath, against his skin.
